BELLE J. BOWIE
RANDOLPH–Belle J. Bowie, 79, of Kinderhook, St., formerly of Jefferson, died Saturday, March 24, 2007, at MaineGeneral M e d i c a l C e n t e r , A u g u s t a Campus, following a long illness. She was born in Nobleboro on June 16, 1927, a daughter of the late Glenwood and Florence (Durell) Gallop.
She was raised by foster parents, Edna and Clarence Perkins of Jefferson.
Belle attended Jefferson schools and graduated from Erskine Academy in 1945.
She was a member of South Parish Congregational Church in Augusta and was a former Red Cross employee.
She had been employed by the State of Maine, working for the Department of Human Services and Attorney Generals Office and retiring from Legal Services for the Elderly.
Belle had a zest for life that never wavered. She was the kind of person that would do anything for anyone, no questions asked. She had a passion for crafts and, as of late, was into making jewelry. One of her proudest moments in life is when she handmade her daughters wedding dress.
Belle was pre-deceased by her foster brother, Charles Perkins.
She is survived by her daughter, Robin P. Mathews and her husband Bill of Randolph; two grandchildren: Joshua and Lauren Mathews.
FRED J. GREENE
CHINA––Fred J. Greene, 77, of Lakeview Drive, died March 27, 2007 at his home. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on September 5, 1929, the son of Frederick J. Greene and Lillian (Tarrant) Greene.
Fred served honorably in the Navy during World War II and Korea.
He was self-employed for more than 40 years, doing business as
Standard Waterproofing.
He was active in sailing, most notably on a Dory named the “Rum Runner,” which could be seen on China Lake with his constant companion, Buddy, his Labrador Retriever. He was a very patriotic person and a Ford
Model A owner.
Fred was predeceased by his parents and by a sister, Gloria Parsons, who died in 2001.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy “Dotty” (Cook) Greene of China; two daughters, Nancy Rountree of Ashburn, Virginia, and Jill Bernier of Brunswick; one son, Timothy J. Greene of China; five grandchildren, Natalie Greene, Amanda Bernier, Scotty Bernier, Lexie Bernier and Lilly Rountree; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

MILDRED ENGSTROM
Jefferson - Mildred Engstrom, 80, of Rockland Rd., died Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at MaineGeneral Rehabilitation and Nursing Care Center, Glenridge, following a long illness. She was born in Whitefield on December 17, 1926, a daughter of the late Earl and Annie, (Plummer ) Glidden.
Mrs. Engstrom was a graduate of Union High School and had been employed by the State of Maine at the Augusta Mental Health Institute for 23 years.
She was pre-deceased by a brother, Buster Glidden and a sister,
Virginia Howard.
Mrs. Engstrom is survived by her two sons: Kirt Engstrom and his wife Laurie, of Jefferson, and Kraig Engstrom, Sr. and his wife Paula, of Whitefield; a brother, Gordon Glidden, of Pittston; two sisters: Doris Lailor, of Waldoboro, and Mary Bowman, of Litchfield; two grandchildren:
Kraig Engstrom, Jr. and Krissy Engstrom; four step-grandchildren: Terra Basil, Chris Ward, Trevor Ward and Felecia Ward as well as several nieces and nephews.
ALLEN R. YORK
CANAAN–Allen R. “Rooster” York, 50, of Canaan, died on M o n d a y ,
March 19, 2007, at home, with his fiancée, Mary Brothers, at his side, following a long battle with cancer.
Allen was born in Skowhegan on September 26, 1956. He was one
of five children, the son of James and Viola (Scribner) York. He graduated from Skowhegan High School and began a long career as a designer in the shoe industry.
Allen was a member of the Maine Militia, Mercer Unit. He was the area representative for the United Bikers of Maine. He loved riding his Honda 500
Shadow with his “lady,” with the wind in his face. Allen was also a talented woodworker and created beautiful heirloom pieces of furniture.
Allen leaves behind his fiancée, Mary Brothers of Canaan; his son, Christopher and his daughter, Nicole, all of Kennebunkport; his mother Viola
of Skowhegan; his three brothers Michael, Patrick, and Brian, all of Skowhegan; one sister Patricia Ann of Canaan; several nieces and nephews; and many good friends.
