The 18th annual Maine Open Juried Art Show featured in Winslow

The 18th Annual Maine Open Juried Art Show is currently being held at the Winslow Public Library. Sponsored by the Waterville Area Art Society, the awards were presented on March 27, with the Best in the Show Award going to the painting entitled “Stephen” by Jim McLear of Embden.
     This year’s show included 144 paintings selected from the 165 entries by 86 artists from 49 towns. All the  paintings were in five divisions: oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel and other. The judges were Kacy Karien, Curatorial Assistant at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Weston LaFountain, Gallery Curator for Greenhut Galleries in Portland and Garry Mitchell, Assistant Professor of Art at Colby College teaching art studio.
     Thirty-five artists received awards totaling $4,203.00 which were made possible by 30 sponsors.
     The first place winners in each division were Judith Schuppien, of Pittston (oil), Debra Grover, of Corinna (acrylic), Terry O’Maley, of Troy (watercolor), Jean Victory, of Winslow (pastel) and Walter Gaffney-Kessell, of Blue Hill (other).
     The Judges Award was given to Janice Anthony, of Jackson, the Harry Faust Memorial Award was presented to John LeBlanc, of Levant, and the Portland Museum of Art Award was handed to Andrew Busque, of Waterville.
     All art work will remain on display until April 21 during which time visitors can vote for their favorite painting that will receive the People’s Choice Award.

     Mary Louise Town Jaqua, of Winslow, whose painting “Reeds” received the Special Merit Award in the oil division, is director of the show. She expressed her appreciation to the show committee and all the artists and sponsors.
