Obituaries

ALBERT C. YORK
WINSLOW––Albert C. York passed away March 15, 2007. He was born June 17, 1934, to Hortense and Preston York.
     He was a Naval veteran and married his childhood sweetheart, Joyce M. Caswell York, and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on
September 8, 2006.
     He was predeceased by a brother, Gerald and two sisters, Geraldine and Albertine.
     He was very versatile in the work field and had much experience both in the professional field and personal life.
     Albert was co-founder of the Water-Oak Gem and Mineral Society of Waterville.
     He is survived by his loving wife, many nieces, nephews, one great-great-niece, and one greatgreat nephew.
 
MERTON E. SPRAGUE SR.
 
UNITY–-Merton Eugene Sprague Sr.,76, of Unity, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, March 18, 2007. He was born in Whitefield on
February 2, 1931, the son of the late Otis and Mildred (Weeks) Sprague.
     On February 2, 1951, his birthday, Merton married the former Alice N. Abbott.
     He drove a skidder for Huff Forestry for several years, and then was employed by Diamond International until they closed.  He then worked for Carlton Woolen Mill in Gardiner until he retired.
     Merton was a very caring man who loved his family deeply. He truly enjoyed working in his gardens as well as woodworking.
     Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his eight brothers.
     Merton will be sadly missed byhis wife of 57 years, Alice; his two sons, Merton E. Sprague Jr. and his wife, Pamela A., of Unity, and Alvah H.  Sprague and his wife, Kathy R., of Rome; five grandchildren, Kenneth R.
Sprague of California, Amy Jewell and her husband Craig,of Canaan, Joni Sprague, of Fairfield, Heather Sprague of Portland, and Dustin Sprague of
Rome; his great-grandson, Tate Jewell of Canaan; as well as several nieces and nephews whom he was very close to.
 
DR. ROBERT F. LOVEJOY
 
EAST VASSALBORO––Dr. Robert F. Lovejoy, 89, of Farmington and East Vassalboro, died on March 17, 2007. Bob was born in Chesterville on
September 16, 1918, the son of Dr. Frederick and Susan (Holt) Lovejoy. A brother, Frederick Lovejoy, predeceased him.
     He was raised in the Farmington area and graduated from Hebron Academy in 1937. He attended college at University of Maine graduating in 1941. He went on to study dentistry at Tufts University, graduating in 1943. Bob was a World War II veteran, having served his country in the Army as a General Dental Officer from 1944 until 1946. He established his dental practice in Farmington and provided services to families in the Farmington area until his retirement in 1986.
     Bob was an enthusiast of many things. He served on the Board of Trustees for the Farmington Public Library for many years and was a lifetime member of Maine Masonic Lodge No. 20 of Farmington. Bob was an avid
mountain climber and was very active in the Appalachian Trail Club. He spent many happy hours clearing trails, assisting with building projects and collecting comment cards from along the trail. He enjoyed hiking
and inspired many to find the beauty in it. He met his soulmate while on the trail, and they went on to spend many happy years together climbing mountains and seeking out Maine’s geological treasures. Some of Bob’s greatest adventures were to spend weeks at the summit of Mount
Washington at the Weather Observatory.
     Bob will leave a huge void in the life of his soulmate, Bertye Haywood of East Vassalboro. He will be dearly missed by his extended families, Lee and Dawn Haywood, of East Vassalboro and Drew Mitchell of Skowhegan. He
will be especially missed by his grandchildren, Scott and Jaime Haywood of Benton, Holly Haywood and Nicholas Scandore of Winslow and Goldie Mansir of Mercersburg, Pennsylvania. They will especially remember Bob for
his love of the Shrine Circus, his master puppetry and origami skills, the many Scrabble games and the wonderful outdoor adventures. He will also be
missed by his great-grandchildren, Sierra Haywood and Liam Scandore of Maine and Joshua, Kierri, Dannon, Malichy and Callista of Pennsylvania. Bob is also survived by John Lovejoy of Farmington and Marianne (Lovejoy) Drosdik and her five children of Farmington. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

NICHOLAS HIGGINS
 
BENTON––Nicholas “Nick” Mark Higgins, 19, of Benton, died on Thursday, March 15, 2007. Nick was born on November 29, 1987, in Damariscotta the first child of Mark A. Higgins and Britt K. Holmstrom-Salisbury.
     Nick was a graduate of Lawrence High School, class of 2006, and aspired to be a Physical Therapy Assistant.
     In the summers, he would be on his Papa’s farm. He was employed as a stock person at McCormack’s Building Supply in Winslow.
     Nick enjoyed fishing trips with his dad and his brother, Jake. He would always get the “Big One.” He also enjoyed video games and movies. He loved to workout with weights, run and eat healthy. Nick was a very talented artist, always making time for drawing.
     Nick and his brother, Jacob, were always together. Only being 14 months apart, Jake will forever have a special place in his heart for his big brother. They also enjoyed the summer fairs. His neighbor and special friend, Nick, was always there during Nick’s difficult times.
     Nick is survived by his parents and step-parents, Mark and Judy Higgins of Benton, and Britt K. Holmstrom-Salisbury and Roger Salisbury of Benton; his son to be born in July, Deven; his siblings, Jacob A. Higgins, Emma and
Kaysa Salisbury, all of Benton; step-siblings Alan Salisbury of Bangor and Shaye Paradis of Topsham; maternal grandparents Donald and Jane Holmstrom of Winslow; paternal grandparents Winston and Rebecca Higgins of Albion and Bob and Olive Corson of Smithfield; maternal great-grandparents Erold and Edith Holmstrom of Clinton and
Venice, Florida; maternal aunts and uncles Lisen and Harvey Chesley of Clinton, and Kyle and Carissa Holmstrom of Genoa, Nevada; maternal  cousins Danielle and Alex Chesley and Hudson Holmstrom; paternal
aunts and uncles Sarah and Jim Weiss of albion, Laurie and Joe
Ball of albion and Daniel Higgins of Pittsfield; and paternal cousins
Ashley and Jesse Ball, Lyndsey and Bobby Weiss, and Lucas and  Emily Higgins; maternal greatuncle and aunt Steve and Judith Bennett of Freedom, and all of their families; and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

THERESA D. GOODNO-GRAVEL
 CHINA––Theresa D. Goodno-Gravel passed away on Thursday, March 15, 2007, at Mount Saint Joseph in Waterville. She was born May 2, 1923.
     She was predeceased by her father, George Goodno; her mother, Odina LeVasseur; several brothers and sisters, Vincent Goodno, Lucille Goodno, Marie Navitsky, Alphonse Goodno, Irene Traynor, Julia Fortin and Mary-Ann Garneau.
     She was married to Frank (Hutch) Gravel, who passed away May 16, 1995.
     Surviving are a son, John Gravel and his wife, Phyllis, of Benton; a daughter, Joan Corey and husband Tom, of Waterville; grandchildren, Eric Gravel of Bath, Kim Cormier and husband Greg, of Winslow, and Melissa
Brown and husband Nick, of Winslow; great-grandchildren, Kristen, Ryan and Lindsay Cormier of Winslow, and Dylan and Kaylin Brown of Winslow; and many nieces and nephews.
     Theresa attended Waterville schools and later worked at C.F. Hathaway, where she retired after 30 plus years. Theresa enjoyed her family, quilting, knitting, ceramics and her flower garden at camp.

EMILY BEANE
 
BENTON STATION––Emily Brousaides Beane, 88, of Benton Station, passed away Saturday, March 10, 2007, surrounded by her family. She was born on May 26, 1918, in Boston, the daughter of John and Velma (Collemer)
Brousaides.
     She was a graduate of Burdett College in Boston and worked as executive secretary at E.F. Mahady Co. in Boston.
     On February 16, 1945, she married Eugene H. Beane of Bingham.
     Emily was a devoted and beloved wife, mother, aunt and grandmother. An energetic homemaker, she loved to cook, sew, and play cards, Scrabble, croquet and badminton.
     She instilled a love of reading in her children. Her zest for life included many happy hours picnicking, swimming, fishing and boating on the lakes and coast of Maine.
     In her youth, she spent summers with relatives in Lincolnville, and Lincolnville Beach held a special place in her heart.
     Emily was a member of the First Baptist Church of Fairfield for 50 years.
     She served on the finance board, as a deaconess and a Sunday school and Vacation Bible school teacher. She loved visiting the elderly and helping to support her church’s missionary program.
     Later in life, Emily was employed by the Salvation Army, New Hampshire Hospital School of Nursing, and the New Hampshire Department of Health
and Human Services.
     Emily was predeceased by her parents and brother Harry.
     She is survived by her husband, Eugene H. Beane of Benton; daughter Joyce Ray and husband Robert of Dunbarton, New Hampshire; son Alan Beane and wife Janice of Benton; daughter Valerie Otis and husband Paul of
Oakland; son David Beane and wife Becky of Benton; brothers Frederick Brousaides of Wilmington, North Carolina, and George Brousaides of Largo,
Florida; grandchildren Jennifer Johnson of Bristol, Rhode Island, Heather Radl and Rebecca Ray of Dunbarton, New Hampshire, Michael Beane of Newport,
Andrew Beane of Waterville, Kathryn Otis, and Jonathan and Samantha Beane of Benton; eight great-grandchildren, and many dear family and friends.
     A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday, April 1, at the
First Baptist Church, 12 Newhall St., Fairfield.
