ELEANOR M. MAXIMUNITY––
Eleanor May
(Harding) Maxim passed away
peacefully at Tallpines Health
Care Facility in Belfast on
Thursday February 28, 2008. She
was born in Troy on May 25,
1939, the only child of the late
Frank and Aurie (Sands)
Harding.
She attended Troy schools and
graduated from Freedom
Academy in 1956. On May 31,
1958, she married Linwood
Withee Jr. and they spent 28
years together before he died in
1987. Eleanor married Mahlon
Maxim on August 18, 1989.
Mahlon passed away april 18,
1991.
Eleanor had many friends. She
resided at Unity Leisure Homes
and enjoyed playing cribbage
with her friends Wilma and
Debbie. She also enjoyed doing
genealogy, collecting coins and
stamps, clipping coupons, scrapbooks,
and playing with her two
cats, Bear and Midnight.
Eleanor served as town clerk of
Detroit in her early years. She
worked as a certified nursing
assistant at Chandler Nursing
Home in Pittsfield for 13 years,
was a member of the Jolly
Neighbors in Detroit, was the
Troy correspondent for the
Republican Journal for years, a
member of Seven Star Grange in
Troy and the Unity Senior
Citizens.
She is survived by three
stepchildren, Florence, Raymond
and Roland Maxim, and her cat
Midnight. She was predeceased
by a stepdaughter, Rita
Stoughton.

BONNIE J. CAOUETTE
WINSLOW––
Bonnie Jean
Caouette of Winslow passed
away on Friday, February 29,
2008. Bonnie was born on May
31, 1959 in Waterville the daughter
of Dr. Zacharias and Mary
Eugenia (O’Connor) Matthews.
She attended Oak Grove High
School, graduating in 1979. She
then worked in her father’s office
until he retired. She later was
employed with Dr. Rosalind
Waldron until she had to leave.
Bonnie’s love of nature is evident
throughout her house. It is
riddled with branches, plants and
several trees. She also loved
watching the deer and animals
that showed up around her home.
Recently, a sunroom was added
to her house so she could enjoy
the outdoors in comfort.
The most important things in
Bonnie’s life were her family and
friends.
People grew to love Bonnie
soon after they met her. This was
a testament to her loving and caring
personality.
She was predeceased by her
parents, Dr. Zacharias and Mary
Matthews.
Bonnie will be sadly missed by
her husband of 27 years, Michael
R. Caouette; her brother Zachary
Matthews and wife Judy of
Oakland and their four children,
Alyssa, Thalia, Alexander and
godchild Brandon; twin uncles,
Lawrence O’Connor of
California and Thomas O’Connor
of Arizona; two very special
friends, Bonnie Goodwin of
Waterville and Jeannie O’Keefe
of Vassalboro; and her adopted
mother, Mrs. Lucille Caouette

ALICE B. CHEESEMAN
UNITY––
Alice Barbara
Chandler Cheeseman, 70, passed
away unexpectedly Sunday,
March 2, 2008, at a Portland hospital.
Alice was born in Quincy,
Mass., on March 16, 1937. She
was the daughter of Harry W. and
Barbara (Curry) Chandler III of
Cape Cod, Mass.
She attended Quincy High
School, and graduated from
Massachusetts General Hospital
School of Nursing on August 31,
1957.
Alice was a registered nurse for
51 years, and worked in various
areas of healthcare. She was certified
in psychiatric nursing and
worked locally for Kennebec
Valley Regional Health Agency,
Seton 5th Hall, and the Belfast
Probate Court.
Alice was a true champion of
community philanthropy, serving
on countless committees and
boards throughout Central
Maine. She served on the Unity
Budget Committee from 1989 to
2007, and was chairwoman of
that board for many years. She
was on the Firehouse committee
from 1999 to 2007, and was a
active voice in the drive to build
a new firehouse in Unity. Alice
was one of the founding members
of the Unity Barn Raisers, incorporated
in 1996. She served on
the Board of Directors from 1996
to 2007, and as vice chairwoman
from 1996 to 1998, and chairwoman
in 2005 and 2006. Alice
was recently awarded the “oneof-
a-kind” Kitchen Table Award,
in recognition of her years of
selfless service to the community.
She also served as an adviser on
Maine Community Foundation’s
Waldo County Committee from
1998 to 2006, and as chairwoman
from 2000 to 2005. Alice successfully
led the first ever
Partners Program Campaign in
Waldo County in 2004-05, which
secured a $25,000 grant for
Waldo County from the
Betterment Fund. She was also a
long-time member of the Unity
Democrats, and greatly enjoyed
serving as a delegate to the State
and National Democratic
Conventions.
Alice lived an active, fun-filled
life. She enjoyed reading, cooking,
gardening, antiquing, and
being with her friends and family.
She was an avid traveler, and
thoroughly enjoyed taking her
grandchildren on vacations and
cruises. Alice also enjoyed taking
her grandchildren to their orthodontic
appointments, which were
always followed by a trip to Pad
Thai Too for lunch.
Alice was predeceased by her
father, Harry W. Chandler III.
She is survived by her mother,
Barbara C. Chandler; her sister,
Nancy Clapp; her beloved husband,
Gordon E. Cheeseman Sr.;
her children, Gordon Cheeseman
Jr. and his wife, Cherrie, Martha
Mayberry and her husband,
Rusty, Melissa Cheeseman and
her husband, Karl Swenson, and
Eliza Quill and her husband,
Mark; and her grandchildren,
Kristen alice Cheeseman, Tessa
Melissa, Colleen Laura and Ian
Maxwell Chandler Mayberry,
Hannah Marie Gilman and
Kristen Mary Quill, and George
Karl Swenson.

HILMAA. CALDWELL
UNITY––
Hilma Avis Caldwell,
78, of Unity died on Tuesday,
March 4, 2008, following a brief
illness. She was born in Stratton
on June 15, 1929, daughter of
Norris and Julia (York) Clark.
Hilma attended school in
Stratton, where she graduated.
She lived there until 1967 when
she moved to Knox. In 1992 she
moved to Unity. She was
employed with Stratton
Manufacturing and later waitressed
at Roger’s Restaurant in
Stratton. She married her husband
Jesse Caldwell in January of
1948 and enjoyed many years
together until his passing on
September 15, 1992.
Hilma was very active in various
organizations including past
Matron of the Somerset Chapter
of the Eastern Star, past chief of
the Natanis Temple Pithion
Sisters, member of the Thorndike
Fire Department Auxiliary, member
of the American Legion Post
No. 50 Ladies Auxiliary of Unity,
and member of the Senior
Citizens Group of Unity. She
enjoyed attending these meetings
with her twin sister, Wilma, especially
the American Legion conventions.
She was predeceased by her
husband and her parents.
Hilma is survived by a daughter,
Norma Andrews and her husband,
Dick, of North Carolina;
two sons, Ralph Caldwell and his
wife, Sharon, of Stratton, and
Larry Caldwell and his wife,
Nichole, of Knox; two sisters, her
twin sister, Wilma Stewart of
Unity, and Karlene Bachelder of
Newry; her brothers, Norris
Clark and his wife, Virginia, of
Skowhegan and Jeffery Hayes
and his wife, Nancy, of Poland;
nine grandchildren, Scott Savage
and his wife, Tami, Angela
Dickerson, Jeremiah Caldwell
and his wife, Kelley, Jessi
Caldwell, Jodie Caldwell, Kelcie
Peabody, Jesse Caldwell,
Christopher Caldwell, and
Abigail Caldwell; nine greatgrandchildren,
Heather and
Matthew Savage, Jonny and
Connor Dickerson, Sydney

Liberty Taylor; her cousin,
Robert York and his wife, Mary,
