Unity welcomes spring

Downtown Unity will be filled with fresh produce and local products, great yard sale bargains, racing ducks, and delicious chicken barbecue with all the fixings on Saturday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Unity Farmers Market vendors, Unity Area Rotary, Unity Barn Raisers, and community members will be kicking off another year of Unity Market Day with the opening day of the farmers market, the Rotary annual rubber duck race in Sandy Stream, the famous Rotary chicken barbeque, and a community yard sale.

Unity Market Day, a project of the Unity Barn Raisers, has been around for almost a decade and many area residents proclaim that it is “the place to be on Saturdays.” Customers get the freshest products and produce and support area farmers at the same time.

“Unity Market Day is a great farmers‚ market but it also does so much more for the community,” explained Tess Woods, Barn Raisers‚ Executive Director. “The market is a seed that was planted by the Barn Raisers. This seed has grown into a hearty perennial that just gets more and more vibrant and beautiful with each passing season. By shopping at market we support our local economy, support our working rural landscape, and create community. Market is a place to catch up on what‚s happening, to see neighbors, to make new friends, to watch children grow up.”

Community members are welcome to set up a yard sale booth (free for UBR members or $5 for non-members) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The duck race will begin at 11 a.m. and the barbecue will be at noon. The barbecue will cost $6/$3 for over 65, under 14 or income eligible.

The Barn Raisers are looking for volunteers to run community programming during the 2007 Market Day season. If you are interested in volunteering your services to run a craft activity, story hour, agricultural demonstration, taste test booth, or game please contact ubr@uninets.net or 948-9005.
