Palermo students take part in Earth Day
Students in the first, second, and third grades at the
Palermo
Consolidated School have been taking part in a nationwide project to raise community awareness about environmental issues and Earth Day.
The Earth Day Groceries Project is managed online by a third grade teacher in
Seattle, Washington , and has been going on for some years. It is “one of the oldest and largest educational projects on the Internet.”
Local participation was coordinated by art teacher Kathy Sparrow, third grade teacher Amy Simoneau, and the management at Tobey’s Market. The students decorated paper grocery bags from Tobey’s with environmental slogans and artwork. The bags were then delivered back to Tobey’s to be used to bag groceries
on Earth Day, spreading awareness about environmental issues.
Students in each class voted for the best bag. The winners were: Caleb Tyler in first grade, Trenton Rhodes in second grade, and Ashley Sylvester in third grade They each got an Earth Day blue ribbon, helped Mrs. Simoneau to deliver the bags, and brought back popsicles for everyone. Customers shopping at Tobey’s at that time will get a colorful surprise!
Kathy and Amy are very pleased with the results of this project and proud of their students. Plans are in the works to make it bigger and better next year.
